The Health Challenge

Health services have always presented a challenge in this region. Harsh weather conditions, an influx of refugees, poverty, persistent conflict and culture have escalated the challenges in healthcare. Before the construction of the UNHCR supported1 Maleyley2 Health Post, residents depended on medical outreaches and government led vaccination programs. Medical staff shortage has also been upon the region, meaning residents had to trek long distances to seek medical help.

The Health Post

To tackle the health issue, RRDO with support from UNHCR constructed the Maleyley Dispensary in 2013 in Maleyley2 center, 33km from Daadab Town. The health post consists of a reception, examination room, a pharmacy, a sterilization room, a laboratory, consultation room, injection room, a doctor/nurse room and a drug storage room. There is also a unit with 5 latrines.

Staff quarters are also one of the challenges facing most institutions in the region. To mitigate this challenge, a two units staff quarters was also constructed to enhance the staff presence at the institution. To further improve the functionality of the facility, an elevated water tank was also constructed at the facility and all the piping works done. The water will flow to the institution once the borehole being done by the ministry of water at the neighborhood is complete.

Facilitation

As a continuation of the project, the health post received medical equipment in 2014 to support its operations. examination and delivery beds, Binocular microscope, Minor operating table, Ambu bags, weighing machines, Digital thermometers, MVA kits, baby coats etc. The furniture equipments included stackable chairs, patient beds, patient bed side lockers, Drug cabinets, office tables with drawers, beds and mattresses for the accommodation block etc. Solar system included installation of 80 watt solar cell panel, 60Amp charge controller, 2500watt true sine wave inverter, 12 volts 105 Amphor Solar battery.

Impact

The health facility has now enhanced accessibility to medical services for 3,080 persons in Maleyley1 and 2 villages. Families that used to trek for 5 hours and a distance of more that 3kms looking for water can now draw water from the kiosks at their doorsteps
